The colourful opening ceremony was attended by the Presidentsof both Azerbaijan and the International Chess Federation and the superborganisation subsequently made the event a great success.Almost all of the world’s best players competed, including World ChampionMagnus Carlsen. Among the very few top players missing were Levon Aronian,Vishy Anand, Peter Svidler, Boris Gelfand and Vassily Ivanchuk, the latterbecause he had decided to play in a draughts tournament instead!After a number of withdrawals a total of 170 teams took part in the open eventand 134 in the women’s competition. Most of the missing teams were from Africaand probably couldn’t make it due to visa problems.
